Charcoal is the remains after organic matter, most often wood, is carbonized in a closed, controlled environment.
As the heat produced by burning charcoal is hotter, more even, and more easily controlled than wood, it has been valued throughout human history.[1]

In the 5th century Greece, charcoal was used to heat and light up homes.[2] as well as blacksmith's furnace.[1]
1st century BCE
The habit of using braziers with charcoal was also widely used in Egypt during the Ptolemaic rule.[3]
Renaissance
During the 15th century, the common recipe for gunpowder included charcoal mixed with brimstone and saltpeter, as used by the Italian Brotherhood of Assassins for their smoke bombs.[4]
18th century
During the American Revolutionary War, the Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton needed charcoal along with iron to create weapon blades.[5]
