The Canary Islands, also known as the Canaries, is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean lying off the northwestern coast of Africa and an autonomous community of Spain.
History
By the early 18th century, the Canary Islands were a popular stopping point for trans-Atlantic travelers and traders,[1] as well as a popular location for European Jesuits and missionaries due to their churches.[2] The Welsh pirate Edward Kenway saw potential profit in the constant flow of travelers and delivered shipments of olive oil,[1] wine,[2] and cocoa to the city.[3]
