The Calleva Outpost was an Anglo-Saxon outpost in the northeast of Hampshire, England. It was once the capital of the Atrebates tribe and later a former Roman town. While a large part of the ruins remained untouched, the Saxons made camp in the town's amphitheater, while archers were stationed on top of the buildings nearby.
History[edit | edit source]
In the 870s, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir visited the outpost and came across several skeletons in one of the buildings. The bodies belonged to several members of the Legio IX Hispana who had remained in Great Britain follow the Roman exodus in the early 5th century and they had left a note listing their names. Eivor also recovered a Roman artifact near the skeletons.[1]
Later on, Eivor proceeded inwards and eliminated the Saxons in the amphitheater, looting a tungsten ingot from soldier's body as well as the Drekar Shield from a chest in an underground chamber.[2]
By 871, after the Battle of Bedwyn, Geirmund Hel-hide and his company, the Hel-hides, followed Guthrum and Halfdan Ragnarsson as they camped outside the Roman ruins. During a stormy night, Geirmund and his company talked of the Romans ruling over England before dying from their own wars and the current circumstances. However, during the night, they moved from the rest in Calleva and forward towards Searesbyrig.[3]
