A bull shark

Bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) are a group of shark species commonly found worldwide in warm, shallow waters along coasts and in the rivers.

History

During the early 18th century, the pirates Edward Kenway and Adéwalé hunted bull sharks for their valuable bones and skin. The sharks could also be found roaming the underwater shipwreck sites, deterring the divers from recovering the sunken treasures. They frequented the Gibara and Dry Tortuga regions of the Caribbean.[1]

Around the same time, Alonzo Batilla also sought out the sharks, though he fished for them instead of hunting.[2]

Behavior

Unlike great white sharks, bull sharks tended to swim in fairly straightforward patterns, making them relatively easy to hit with harpoons. When retaliating against attackers, bull sharks adopted a more erratic approach, before going straight for the whaling boat.[1]
