A Bireme was a medium-sized sea-faring vessel and a type of galley invented and used by the Greeks of antiquity. Triremes were larger ships than biremes, whereas pentaconters were smallest of the three classes.

During the Peloponnesian War biremes were used by Athenians, Spartans, as well as pirates.[1]

Etymology

  • The bireme derives its name from its two rows of oars, manned with one man per oar.
