Bats in 9th century Ireland

Bats are small flying mammals belonging to the Chiroptera order. Most bats are nocturnal creatures that use ultrasounds, listening to echoes, to fly around in the dark. During the day, they are often found in caves and other dark places to sleep and hide. Many bat species eat fruits and insects, but a few species drink blood from cattle, sheep, or deer.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

During the Viking expansion into 9th-century England, Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan encountered numerous bat colonies in caverns spread across England, including the old Roman caverns beneath the eastern part of the city of Ledecestre. On rare occasions, bats were also seen flying outside, including around The Witch's House near Guildford,[2] or around Children of Danu locations in Ireland.[3]

Centuries later during the Renaissance, the Florentine nobleman and Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore encountered many small bat nests in 1478 while exploring the catacombs beneath the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella, where he had learned a meeting of the Italian Templars was to take place under the church.[4]

After the French Revolution of the late 1790s, the Assassin Arno Dorian encountered numerous bats in the Saint-Denis catacombs while on sabbatical away from the French Brotherhood based in Paris.[5] After recovering a dropped lantern from a raider who fell down a pit, Arno found that the lamp would keep any bats from flying too close to him, as well as provide light by which he could see to navigate underground.[6]
