Bats are small flying mammals belonging to the Chiroptera order.

Most bats are nocturnal creatures that use ultrasounds, listening to echoes, to fly around in the dark. During the day they're often found in caves and other dark places to sleep and hide. Many species of bat eat fruits and insects, but a few species drink blood from cattle, sheep or deer.

History

During the Viking expansion into 9th-century England, the shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan encountered a colony of bats in the old Roman caverns beneath the eastern part of the city of Ledecestre, near the old Hidden Ones bureau and a Roman artifact.[1]

Centuries later, after the French Revolution of the late 1790s, the Assassin Arno Dorian encountered numerous bats in the Saint-Denis catacombs while on sabbatical away from the French Brotherhood based in Paris.[2] After recovering a dropped lantern from a raider who fell down a pit, Arno found that the lamp would keep any bats from flying too close to him, as well as provide light by which he could see to navigate underground.[3]
