Bardas was a soldier stationed at the Akrokorinth Fort in Korinthia during the Peloponnesian War. He was also an acquaintance of the Athenian statesman Alkibiades.

Biography

Around 430 BCE, Bardas sent for a mercenary. Instead of the one he sent, he met the Spartan misthios Kassandra instead. Though Bardas was suspicious, he accepted the package Kassandra had been tasked by Alkibiades to give him. Within the package was a cast of a penis, engraved to tell Bardas to give it to his wife Thelia, for "when she starts to miss me."[1]

Enraged, Bardas questioned Kassandra about the sender of the package, and swore to kill them. While it had in truth been Alkibiades, he had stressed to Kassandra the importance of telling Bardas it was from Diodoros.[1]

Trivia

  • If Kassandra lied to Bardas about the cast, saying it was from her, the soldier attacked her, leading the misthios to kill him in self-defense.
  • Bardas wears a Phrygian Helmet.
