The US Civil War seems like a logical next step as (SPOILERS) Connor looks to the sea in the epilogue just as the last British ship leaves for England, Connor turns back to look at the city and see's slaves being auctioned off to the highest bidder, it reminds me of what Achillies says in that Connor's people would never be treated as equals, nevermind African American's. In conclusion I think AC4 should have us freeing the slaves and Uniting America.
