Aventine Hill

The Aventine Hill (Latin: Collis Aventinus, Italian: Colle Aventino) is one of the seven hills of Rome. The hill is located in the Antico district south of Tiber Island.

History

Another one of the Seven Hills of Rome upon which the ancient city was built, the Aventine was mainly a suburb during the monarchy and early Republic. In 456 B.C.E., a law was passed allowing plebeians to own property on the hill, causing the city to quickly grow beyond its walls. This rapid expansion made it far more vulnerable to capture by the Gauls. Only after a bloody invasion, the Senate passed a motion to build a new wall encircling the Aventine.
