Augustine Washington Sr. (1694 – 1743) was a tobacco planter and the father of George Washington, the first President of the United States.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1715, Augustine inherited about 1,000 acres of land at Bridges Creek, Virginia, from his father, and renamed the property Little Hunting Creek.[1] He also married Jane Butler, with whom he had four children. He had two of them, Lawrence and Augustine, Jr.,[2] enrolled in the Appleby Grammar School in England. There, Lawrence was recruited into the Templar Order.[3]
After Jane's death, Augustine married Mary Ball in 1731, with whom he had six children.[2] In 1743, Augustine died, and Little Hunting Creek was inherited by Lawrence, who would eventually rename it Mount Vernon.[1]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Augustine's oldest son with Mary, George, was forced to assist in providing for the family following the death of his father,[4] and also began looking up to Lawrence as a mentor of sorts.[5]
