Yamabe (山部; 737 – 806), also known as Emperor Kanmu (桓武天皇), was the 50th Emperor of Japan, reigning from 781 until his death.[1] Kanmu is regarded as a foundational figure in Japanese history, being the only emperor who wielded power that was unencumbered by regents or shōguns.[2]
Biography[edit | edit source]
During his reign, Kanmu moved Japan's capital city from Nara, home to many scandals involving the Buddhist clergy, to the new Nagaoka-kyō. However, due to an uprising and subsequent religious issues, another relocation needed to be undertaken. Kanmu then set out on a trip with his geomancers to find the perfect place for a new capital, eventually settling in what would become Kyoto. In 794, Kanmu arrived by palanquin along with his court and army at the Imperial Palace,[2] which would remain as the home to the Emperors of Japan until Emperor Meiji moved to Tokyo in 1869.[3]
