Thamus was a mythological king of a great city in Upper Egypt.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Mythology[edit | edit source]
On one occasion, King Thamus was visited by the god Theuth who offered him the invention of writing. The god told Thamus that it was an elixir of memory and wisdom. However, the king refused the gift believing that people would no longer use their memories, if they could simply read instead.[1]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
In around 422 BCE, the philosopher Sokrates recalled the story of Thamus to his friend Kassandra.[1]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Thamus is only ever attested in Plato's story Phaedrus as told by Sokrates but many scholars posit that he is either Amun or Osiris under a different name. [citation needed]
