Claudius Ptolemy (c. 100 – c. 170) was a Greco-Egyptian mathematician, astronomer, geographer, astrologer, and poet who also held Roman citizenship. He is best remembered for his Geography, an authoritative treatise on the matter, and Almagest, a text on planetary motion based on geocentrism that solidified it as the dominant astronomical model for centuries across Eurasia.[1]

In the 860s, a Persian astronomer used a translated copy of Kitab Al-Majasti—a corruption of its original title—to compare Ptolemy's notes on the equinoctial hours to their own calculations. Much to their joy, the equations matched, and the emboldened scientist decided to conduct more observations from another vantage point.[2]
During the early 16th century, the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore bought a copy of Geography from a book shop in Constantinople.[3]
