Pope Paul IV (28 June 1476 – 18 August 1559), born Gian Pietro Carafa, was Pope from 1555 to his death.

In 1559, he published the Pauline Index, a list of texts officially banned by the Catholic Church for being deemed heretical, anti-clerical or lascivious.[1] Despite its broad scope, his list was largely ignored and replaced within the year by another index which relaxed the restrictions.[2]
