A nurse is a health care provider focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life.[1]

While medical attendants who cared for their patients had existed since ancient times, professional nursing only took form in the 19th century thanks to reforms brought about by Florence Nightingale.[1]
During the 9th century, the nurse Anna served as the childhood caregiver of the Byzantine prince Leo VI and helped the Hidden Ones Basim ibn Ishaq and Hytham investigate the Order of the Ancients, who was targeting Leo, by spying on the prince's tutor Theodore, who was involved with the Order.[2] In England, the Anglo-Saxon woman Moira served as the chief herbalist and caretaker of the Viking jarl Halfdan Ragnarsson, whom she provided with her remedies to treat his ailments.[3]
