He was with the army in the winter of 1777–17778 when they were encamped at [[Valley Forge]]. Thousands were dying from starvation, cold, and diseases due to the lack of food and poor housing, and Greene was appointed as {{wiki|Quartermaster General of the United States Army|quartermaster}} to help remedy this situation.
