Nara (奈良) is a city in Japan and one of its earliest capitals.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Nara was the capital of Japan in the 8th century. The Tang Buddhist monk Jianzhen arrived at Nara in 755 and established an ordination platform at Tōdai-ji for the imperial family to receive the Bodhisattva Precepts. He also commissioned the building of Tōshōdai-ji, where he would install the śarīra for safeguarding against the Golden Turtles who hunted them.[2]
