However, Modu was freed from imprisonment in Yangzhou City by Wei Yu's disciple in exchange for his acting as their contact with the Xiongnu. Modu promised the youxia and their companion Yu Ying that he would first locate his tribe then rendezvous with them at the Mu Us Village to return their favour.
