New York draft riots[edit | edit source]

Following the beginning of his second term as Governor, in July 1863 the New York draft riots were starting to get out of hand. Seymour and Mayor George Opdyke opposed the riots wanting to end it. His stance on the matter being discussed at the same time by Niblo's Garden theatergoers to the Italian opera singer Adelina Patti.[1] Seymour expressed concern over the violence and disorder, and he urged restraint to maintain order in the face of widespread unrest.[2] Unbeknown to the Governor, the riots were in fact orchestrated by William M. Tweed as the Grand Master of the Templar Order, and had planned for the city to burn and sweep Seymour away with it.[3]
