Horacio Lloyd Gates (1727 – 1806) was a general in the Continental Army during the early years of the American Revolutionary War.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1777, Horatio Gates led the Continental Army to a decisive victory at Saratoga around the same time the commander-in-chief George Washington suffered consecutive losses at Brandywine and Germantown. Gates subsequently corresponded with Major General Thomas Conway about Washington's failings. When Washington learned of the letters, he took it as a sign that both of his subordinates were conspiring behind his back to replace him, and Gates and Conway had to explain themselves before the Continental Congress. The episode, which became known as the "Conway Cabal", ended with Gates apologizing and Conway being forced to resign.[1]
