Since the inauguration was november 1st, he literally could not have been commissioned that month. Going by Greene's biographical encyclopedia of composers, it was the year before.

Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (1813 – 1901) was an Italian composer and senator best known for his operas.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1868,[2] Giuseppe Verdi was commissioned by Khedive Ismail Pasha of Egypt to compose a new opera for the inauguration of the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo the following year, though due to the Franco-Prussian War it could not be completed in time, with Verdi's Rigoletto being performed instead.[3] The commissioned opera, Aida, would debut in the Opera House two years later, in January 1871.[4]
