The Erinyes (Greek: Ἐρῑνύες, English: "Avengers, Furies") are a group of primordial goddesses of vengeance in Greek mythology. Born from the spilled blood of Uranus, they are older than the Olympians. Their Roman counterpart were called the Dirae.[1]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Demeter, the Greek goddess of agriculture and fertility, once assumed the guise of a Fury due to the god Poseidon's actions. This event was memorized as a monument on top of a hill in the Forest of Soron in Arkadia.[2]
During the 5th century BCE, a shipwreck located within the Korinthian Gulf bore the name of one of the Furies: Alekto.[3] The Erinyes were also used to explain The Octopus, a member of the Gods of the Aegean Sea branch of the Cult of Kosmos; according to a tale, she was a captain whom the Erinyes slew, after which she was resurrected in her new form.[4]
