Edmund Waller (1606 – 1687) was an English poet and politician who sat in the House of Commons multiple times between 1624 and 1679.

During the English Civil War, Waller sought to return the deposed English king Charles I to London, an attempt which later came to be known as "Waller's Plot". During a sermon at the church of St Margaret, however, the plot was discovered by a fellow politician John Pym. Waller and his co-conspirators were arrested at the church, with the former being banished and exiled from England.[1]
