Built in 1679, Fort Nassau was situated on a hill next to the city. From its perch on the cliff, the fort could overlook both of the town's harbors as well as the surrounding ocean, making it a perfect location from which to defend the island.
Originally it was Columbus who first thought of building the fort, in order to secure the island for Spain. But it was a group of private people with intent on piracy, together with the governors of the island, who initiated the plan to construct the fort.
The fort was finally demolished in 1897.
