Cynric (died 560) was the second king of Wessex, reigning from 534 to 560.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Conquering the Gewisse[edit | edit source]

Cyrnic and his father Cerdic landed in what would later become Hampshire in 495.[1] There they fought with the Brittonic king Natanleod, and killed him in 508. In 519, his father undertook the throne and founded the House of Wessex. After his death in 534, Cynric succeeded him as king.[2]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

During the 870s, the history of the early foundation of the Kingdom of Wessex was often studied in seminaries in the city of Wincestre. In one such seminary, an account of Cyrnic and his father's exploits against the Gewisse was found and read by the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir while she was in the city.[2]
