In January 1429, Jean de Metz arranged a meeting between Jeanne d'Arc and Robert de Baudricourt, though de Baudricourt arranged for Charles II, his liege lord, to meet the young woman instead, as the duke was keen to meet her. At this point in his life, Charles was 65 years old and quite ill, which historian Simon Hathaway posited was most likely the reason the duke agreed to meet with Jeanne,[3] though his son-in-law, René of Anjou had also suggested that he invite her for a visit, under instructions from his mother, Queen Yolande of Aragon.[2]
