Charles Eden (1673 – 26 March 1722) was the governor of North Carolina from 1713 to his death.
Biography[edit | edit source]
During Eden's tenure as governor, the Carolinas were a haven for pirates, and the governor himself was rumored to have allowed pirate activity in return for receiving shares of their plunder.[1] Eden was also a friend of the legendary pirate, Blackbeard. In the summer of 1718, the pirate halfheartedly accepted a pardon from Eden, only to return to piracy in August of that year.[2]
Upon discovering that Eden had neither the will nor resources to hunt down the pirates ravaging the Carolina coastline, Virginia's governor Alexander Spotswood took it upon himself to do so. Under his orders, Robert Maynard of the Royal Navy tracked down Blackbeard and killed him.[3]
