Chad (c. 634 – 672) was a 7th century Anglo-Saxon churchman who later became abbot of several monasteries in England. He was the brother of Cedd, who was later revered as a saint like himself.
Legacy and influence[edit | edit source]
Known for never having picked up a sword, Chad came to be revered as a saint and had numerous monasteries dedicated to him. During the 9th century, the Order of the Ancients Zealot Redwalda once served as a monk in monastery dedicated to Chad. Redwalda, having attempted to live up to Chad's reputation, reflected on his mistakes after being killed by the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir.[1]
