The Bronze Vessel of Ares

The Bronze Vessel of Ares was a large bronze jar set on a pedestal in the middle of a small fountain on the Greek island of Naxos.

In Greek mythology, the giant twin sons of the god Poseidon and the mortal Iphimedeia, the Aloadai Otos and Ephialtes, imprisoned the god of war Ares within a bronze jar for thirteen months as punishment for his murder of Adonis, the beloved of the goddess Aphrodite.[1]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The image on the vessel is based on the Palaistra Scene: a red-figure cup featuring Mousaios on the left and his teacher Linos on the right.
