Abraham Ortelius (1527 – 1598) was a Brabantian cartographer and geographer. He was the creator of what is considered the first modern world atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.[1]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

At least two of Ortelius' illustrations made it into Peter Beckford's collections nearly 70 years later, one of the maps from the atlas' first printing in 1570,[2] and a detail featuring Ferdinand Magellan's ship Victoria.[3] Both of these would eventually be acquired by the Welsh pirate Edward Kenway.[4]
