The Temple of Thoth was a temple situated in Hermopolis dedicated to Thoth, the Egyptian god of magic and writing.
History[edit | edit source]
During the mid-1st century BCE, Thoth was replaced by Hermes Trismegistus as the patron god of the city on the orders of Berenike, the Nomarch of the Faiyum Oasis. Berenike wrote a letter of commendation to the temple's inhabitants, extending her thanks for embracing Hermes and promised they would be well compensated.[1] The Medjay Bayek of Siwa visited the temple around 48 BCE and found a Papyrus Puzzle inside it.[2]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The Temple of Thoth in game is based on the Great Temple of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel. Its concept art also combines elements from both the Great Temple of Ramesses II and the Small Temple of Nefertari. The real temple had a different appearance and while there are reference sources,[3] the choice to depict it the way it is in game was probably deliberate as to represent the famous Abu Simbel complex. However, in reality, the complex was abandoned and mostly under sand by the 6th century BC.
