Sweyn Forkbeard (963 – 1014) was the King of Denmark from c. 986 until his death, King of the English for the 5 weeks leading up to his death, and King of Norway from c. 986 until 995 and again from 1000 until his death.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
Arriving on England's shores in 1013, Sweyn refused King Æthelred II's usual bribes that had appeased the Vikings and instead dethroned him, claiming the English crown for himself. His son Cnut was heir-presumptive to a vast empire but did not, in fact, inherit any of the kingdoms directly after his father's death.[2]
