Rurik (c. 830 – 879) was a Varangian chieftain of the Rus' who founded and built the city of Novgorod in modern-day Russia. He was also the founder of the dynasty that ruled the various monarchies of Russia until the 17th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 879, Rurik established trading routes across Europe, including one in the Norse-Gaelic Kingdom of Dublin in Ireland. The Dubliners noted Rurik as being a shrewd bargainer under all his fur and leather with a strong love of ale.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Some scholars identify Rurik with Erik Björnsson, a grandson of Ragnar Lothbrok through Björn Ironside. If so this would make him the ancestor of Eric the Victorious, Olof Björnsson, and Styrbjörn the Strong and even more distantly of Sean Molloy.
