The Perioikoi were a people who partially made up the Lakonian population in antiquity, living in the rural areas of Lakonia and Messenia.

Unlike the enslaved helots, perioikoi were merely 'subcitizens' of Sparta, even serving in the army as hoplites.[1]

The villages of Akriai and Krokeai in the Helot Hills were inhabited by perioikoi and helots.[1]
