Nicias (c. 470 – c. 413 BCE), alternatively Nikias, was an Athenian politician and general during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography[edit | edit source]

During the Peloponnesian War, a military camp set along a stone wall within the Isthmus of Poseidon in Korinthia was named Wall of Nikias.[1] Following the Battle of Amphipolis in 422 BCE, Nicias led the Athenian delegation engaging Sparta in peace-talks,[2] which was signed and settled a year later.[3] However, the peace was not permanent. Although the treaty brought forth called for fifty years of peace, the treaty was broken within a decade.[4]
