Máel Sechnaill mac Máele Ruanaid (died 862), also known as Máel Sechnaill I and Malachy,[1] was the High King of Ireland, reigning from 846 to his death. He was the father of Flann Sinna.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 845, Máel captured Viking warrior Thorgest and had him drowned in Lough Neagh, having "taken to anger" after Thorgest "wished to better acquaint [him]self" with Máel's daughter.[1]

After Máel died in 862, allegedly due to being murdered by his nephew Áed Findliath, the High Kingship passed on to the Northern Uí Néill, with Áed succeeding Máel. As per customs, Áed then went on to marry Máel's wife.[2][3]
