Mastic is a fragrant resin secreted by the mastic tree. In Greece the resin is also known as tears of Chios, after the island where the resin is primarily produced.
The resin has been used as a varnish as well as a flavoring, with some wines known to have been mastic-flavored.[1]
During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the island of Chios, including its Mastic Farm.[2]
