The Kite Shield was one of the personal heavy shields owned by Wigmund, an Anglo-Saxon ealdorman of Grantebridgescire and a member Order of the Ancients during the 9th century. This shield was so ornate, it was believed that Wigmund would be more likely to use it to eat roast pig off of rather than for its intended defensive purpose.
Fearing that it would be stolen for its value, Wigmund later had it locked in a chest in Wandrie, though the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan retrieved it for herself during her travels.[1]
