Here's an update of team locations and activities for you to pass on to the others. You'll probably be contacted by one of the members from Sao Paolo. You're their lifeline, so be ready. You'll be glad to know that everyone here is safe for the time being. I'm sure Lucy told you that you'll all be coming here once you have the [[Ezio's Apple|Apple of Eden]]. I don't know what you've heard about this place, but there will be a lot here to show you that I know you're going to love. Lots of history.
 
[[Moscow]]- They remain safe and secure. They are currently chasing a potential lead on another Piece of Eden, so fingers crossed on that one. I've done a little research for them myself and have confirmed a few of their suspicions so it's looking good at the moment.
 
Sao Paolo- They had to move safe houses again and this time it was too close. It's suspected there's a leak on their team so headquarters is looking into it. It's likely the team will go dark soon and try and flush out the mole. Hopefully they can catch it before it catches up to them but they are supported so that's a plus.
 
Osaka- As per plan, they are still dark. They're scheduled to make contact with headquarters in 72 hours so hopefully they're OK and have lost their tail.

I'm still with the others, no disasters yet. It looks like Abstergo is focusing on their satellite instead of hunting for us, so that buys some time. I'm worried about Denver though. Let's try to touch base at 3AM.
 
You'll be up with Desmond and I'm having trouble sleeping these days anyway. The unexpected heat of this European fall is killing me. I don't know how you Continentals handle it. You might as well pass the Denver info on now that it's escalated, they have a right to know.

The Hephaestus Network's home screen

The Hephaestus Email Network was an Internet email service used by the Assassin Order.

While staying in the Sanctuary of Monteriggioni, Desmond Miles, Lucy Stillman, Shaun Hastings, and Rebecca Crane exchanged several messages over the network. Lucy informed them regularly of their schedule and tasks for the week, and the others would exchange emails about various trivial topics, including buying food and going out into the town.[1]

The only outsiders who contacted them were Erudito, a mysterious user who simply informed Desmond of his teammates' email passwords, an Assassin only identified as William M., and another William M. who was actually Warren Vidic impersonating William to be able to converse with Lucy about Desmond's condition without alarming anyone else on the team. William contacted Shaun about the status of other Assassin teams. He also spoke briefly to Desmond himself, upon the recovery of the restored memories of 1506.[2]

On 9 October 2012, Lucy Stillman called the office of Warren Vidic, pleading with him to allow Desmond to stay out of the Animus, as she feared another situation like Subject 16's. Following this, Warren sent Lucy an email under the guise of William M, confirming the suspicions that there was a false William emailing Lucy the entire duration of the team's time in Monteriggioni.[3]

William informed Desmond that his progress was being monitored by Rebecca, and advised him to tell as few people as possible of their findings. Once Desmond explored all the memories, he received another email from William, thanking him for his help, and requesting him not to disclose the information to either Shaun or Lucy, as their security and safety depended on it. Finally, he informed Desmond that they would meet soon.[1]

The Assassins continued to use the Hephaestus Network after arriving at the Grand Temple. During this period, the Isu Juno was able to communicate with Desmond via email, urging him to continue his efforts to find the Grand Temple Key, and showing her disgust with the human race.[4]

  • Hephaestus was the Greek god of technology, blacksmiths, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metals, metallurgy, fire, and volcanoes.
  • Accessing Desmond's account will earn the player the "Mailer Daemon" achievement.
  • The emails sent by William during the The Da Vinci Disappearance memory sequences only appear during a playthrough of the game and are accessible after the completion of Sequence 3. If the player has already completed the entire story, an alternative dialogue will occur when the downloadable content is accessed.
  • Regarding the name "William M." which appeared as the sender in emails separately addressed to Lucy and Shaun, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's lead writer Jeffrey Yohalem said in a podcast on 29 April 2012 that "the William M's are not necessarily the same."[5]
  • In Brotherhood, even though the team's passwords contained a varying amount of letters and numbers, each password would appear as eight characters when Desmond typed it into the computer.
