Once, Odin and Frigg were inseparable. Lovers, partners-in-crime, the pair rampaged across the Nine Realms seeking adventure. Until the birth of their son, Baldr. He was beloved, of course, but motherhood was never Frigg's plan.

At this time, the Æsir were embroiled in a bitter war with the Vanir, one that threatened to decimate both tribes. And so, Odin did the unthinkable, a stark contrast with his depiction throughout Norse myth: he did something truly selfless.

Setting aside his love of Frigg and Baldr, he agreed to marry Freyja, sister of Freyr, Lord of Vanaheim. The two tribes would live together and prosper, but at a great cost to Odin and Frigg.

Later, when Baldr came of age, Frigg sent him to Asgard. Odin was overjoyed to have Baldr close, with Freyja a kind and devoted stepmother. Frigg returned to her adventuring ways, happy to be untethered once more. She surely had other passionate affairs, but Odin remained in her heart, though not in her life.

And so, years later, Frigg and Odin reunited, journeying to Svartalfheim to rescue their son.
