Swansea is a city on the southern coast of Wales.
History[edit | edit source]
Edward Kenway was born in Swansea in 1693 to parents Bernard and Linette. The family later relocated to a farm near Bristol, England, when Edward was ten years old.[1]
During Edward's early years as a privateer, he witnessed far more violence on board the Emperor than anything he had seen before in his seventeen years, even anything he remembered from his birthplace.[2] In 1715, after assuming command of the vessel El Dorado, Edward renamed her the Jackdaw, after a bird commonly found in his hometown of Swansea.[3]
In September 1719, Edward mentioned his upbringing in Swansea during a conversation with Bartholomew Roberts, who claimed that the city was a "teeming metropolis" in comparison with his own birthplace of Casnewydd Bach.[4][5] In November 1720, during his imprisonment in Port Royal, Edward was met by the Templar Woodes Rogers, who recounted the pirate's history to him, including his birth in Swansea.[6][7]
