Ezio's Assassin outfit with the cape hanging over his left shoulder

A cape is a sleeveless outer garment which hangs loosely from one or both shoulders of the wearer, falling behind them to cover a length of their back. Typically, it is fastened around the neck,[1] but smaller designs of capes like those worn by the Assassins Ezio Auditore, Evie Frye, and Jacob Frye may be designed to hang only from one shoulder.

While some capes may afford minimal protection, they are mainly worn as a fashion symbol or like a personalized banner displaying the wearer's allegiances. In this regard, they differ from cloaks, which tend to be heavier, offer greater insulation against the elements, and cover more of the individual's body.

History[edit | edit source]

During the Renaissance, the Italian Assassin Giovanni Auditore wore a cape with his Assassin robes.[2] Upon his imprisonment,[3] he passed the outfit to his son Ezio,[4] who kept it after Giovanni's execution.[5] In his own lifetime, Ezio collected a number of capes. Some, like the Medici and Auditore capes, were gifts accrued due to his good work across Italy, and all could be custom dyed by tailors without distracting from their patterns.[6][7]

In Victorian era London, the British Assassin Evie Frye also collected capes which better suited her stealthier approach to Assassin work.[8]
