In 1585, the [[Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins|Kakushiba ''ikki'']] member and [[samurai]] [[Yasuke]] ventured atop an atakebune, recently under construction. Within the ship's mast, he came across and met with an old ''[[ashigaru]]'', who revealed his past and how he fled from the war. However, he admitted of missing being part of something grand and asked Yasuke for a friendly spar. Yasuke agreed and the two fought each other within the ship. Despite the ''ashigaru''{{'}}s use of his ''[[naginata]]'' and ''[[Ōdachi|ōdachi]]'', he was bested by Yasuke.
