==History==
During the late [[Sengoku period]], Yamazaki and its [[Yamazaki Castle|castle]] served as the stronghold of the Ise clan led by [[Ise Sadatame]]. However, in 1582, Sadatame was poisoned by his younger brother [[Ise Sadaoki|Sadaoki]], who usurped leadership of their clan while Sadatame fled into self-imposed exile. Having joined the secret organization known as the [[Shinbakufu]], Sadaoki took refuge in Yamazaki Castle, from where he conspired with his father-in-law, [[Akechi Mitsuhide]], to seize control of Japan following [[Oda Nobunaga]]'s death.<ref name="The Bad Brother">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[The Bad Brother]]</ref>

In late June 1582, the [[Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins|Kakushiba ''ikki'']] members [[Fujibayashi Naoe]] and [[Yasuke]] infiltrated Yamazaki Castle to confront Sadaoki, in the hopes of [[Interrogation|interrogating]] him for Mitsuhide's whereabouts. Sadatame accompanied them, believing his younger brother could be reasoned with and convinced to abandon the Shinbakufu, while the ''[[Ninja|shinobi]]'' [[Gennojo]] simultaneously infiltrated the castle to try and assassinate both Ise brothers.<ref name="Lost Honor">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Lost Honor]]</ref>

After their respective attempts failed, Gennojo fled while Sadatame was injured and watched as Naoe and Yasuke fought Sadaoki. Following Sadaoki's death, Sadatame vowed to undo his brother's mistakes and thanked Naoe and Yasuke for their help in stopping him.<ref name="Lost Honor"/>

Historically, the initial stages of the Battle of Yamazaki were fought outside the town, hence the battle's name, before the [[Akechi clan|Akechi]] forces were pushed back to [[Shōryūji]], where they were ultimately defeated.<ref>{{WP|Battle of Yamazaki}}</ref> However, in ''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'', this part of the battle is omitted, with the game instead focusing entirely on the siege of [[Shōryū-ji Castle]] and Akechi Mitsuhide's escape and subsequent death.
