I understand the point you're trying to make, but I think that this is simply a matter of semantics. As far as I know, there is nothing particular about the English concept of a "middle name" other than it being a second given name situated in between the first given name and the surname. In this regard, I don't see how it differs from a French ''prénom'' situated in between the first ''prénom'' and the ''nom de famille''. I think a ''middle name'' is just what the English would call such a second ''prénom'' all the same.
