I quite like the modern aspects of AC, but they definitely added way too much to the 21/12/12 story-line. I mean, I like how they said that the apocalypse would happen, but having magical conversations with long-lost civilisations through time and releasing one of these beings on the earth? I don't think so.

As far as the animus goes, I'm perfectly fine with it as long as they allow full free-roaming from the start, and simply ward you away from areas by not having much to do until later. Simply because I hated the white walls of doom.
