If nothing else, AC3 proves Ubisoft can make the games feel fresh and interesting. The new gameplay systems and characters/setting look to be a much needed breath of fresh air to the series and should the story prove to be of equal measure, they will have my money for future titles as long as the quality remains untouched.

Yearly titles are a near guarantee but really, if after games like Brotherhood and Revelations they manage to bring to the table a game like AC3 I wouldn't be so sure that future titles will be a flop.

We may not be able to think of a way a new modern-day story would work, but we are the masses that buy their games.t Ubisoft are the creators. They are very likely to already be discussing the next step for the franchise (as in what to do after Desmond's story is finished).
