Ulf was a friend of the merchant [[Thorsteinn Silvertongue|Thorsteinn]] and his wife [[Gunnhilda Gunnarsdottir|Gunnhilda]], once purchasing a woolen cloak from the latter for his mother in 866. That year, Thorsteinn and Gunnhilda were accused of being oathbreakers by Thorsteinn's rival [[Bjorn]] for providing poor quality sails to be used in the ships for King [[Harald Fairhair|Harald]]'s expeditions. During Thorsteinn's speech to rally people to his side, he revealed Bjorn's acts of sabotage, revealing he had evidence in which Bjorn had taken Gunnhilda's sails for himself while he using a sail he bought from [[Nottfall]] as a substitute. Ulf vouched for Gunnhilda's stiching abilities, clarifying that the sail in question was no work of Gunnhilda's.<ref name="Oaths & Honour" />

Later on, Ulf attended an assembly in which Thorsteinn successfully proved his innocence and uncovering Bjorn's acts of treachery in front of King Harald.
