You have to understand that, mainly in the past, where racism and oppression of the poor actually ruled the world (still does but....), whenever someone spoke of these people's dream of freedom or of a better life, people saw a sparkle of hope in those words and that's one of the reasons why these figures of history appear. At the same time, there are some marketing theories that say that the key to convince someone to do something is to show them your purpose and if you agree then you're more likely to do as you're asked, because subconsciously you will have the feeling that you're working with someone to achieve a mutual goal.
Now at the same time that this talks about lost civilizations and miraculous objects , Assassin's creed has many conspiracy theories within it and I guess that it is possible that a group of people have been manipulating the general population through religion and history.
